Astrophotography Experiences in the Atacama Desert
The Atacama Desert is widely recognized as one of the best places on Earth to observe and photograph the night sky.
Far from light pollution and located at high altitude, the desert offers some of the clearest skies on the planet. Our astrophotography experiences take place several kilometers away from the town of San Pedro de Atacama, deep in the Cordillera de la Sal, where the landscape and darkness create ideal conditions for observing the stars and the Milky Way.
These experiences are designed both for travelers who simply want to enjoy the beauty of the night sky and for photographers looking to capture professional astrophotography images.
Astrophotography for Travelers
This experience is ideal for travelers who want to enjoy the night sky of the Atacama Desert while also having professional photographs taken under the stars.
We travel to a remote location in the Cordillera de la Sal, where the sky is exceptionally dark and the desert landscape creates a spectacular setting.
The experience begins with a short introduction to the night sky, where we identify stars, constellations and other celestial objects using a laser pointer.
After this introduction, we proceed with a professional astrophotography session, where travelers can have as many photos taken as they wish during a session lasting up to 1 hour and 30 minutes.
At the end of the experience we offer a snack and hot chocolate while enjoying the silence and beauty of the Atacama night.
Photographs are taken using professional high-end equipment, including a Sony A7RV camera and Sigma Art 14mm f/1.4 lens, allowing us to capture highly detailed images of the stars and the Milky Way.
Astrophotography for Photographers
This experience is designed for photographers who want to capture the extraordinary night skies of the Atacama Desert.
We visit the same remote locations in the Cordillera de la Sal, moving between different viewpoints to capture a variety of compositions with the Milky Way and the surrounding desert landscapes.
These sessions are suitable for professional photographers seeking guidance as well as for enthusiasts who want to learn astrophotography techniques.
The session has a duration of up to three hours (extendable if desired) and can also be scheduled across multiple nights to explore different locations and compositions.
Snacks and hot beverages are also provided during the experience.
Best Time of the Year for the Milky Way
The best months to photograph the Milky Way galactic center in the Atacama Desert are from April to November.
During this period the galactic core becomes visible in the night sky, offering the best conditions for astrophotography.
Between December and March, weather conditions in the Altiplano can be more unstable due to seasonal storms, and cloudy nights may occur.
During this period we often schedule very early night sessions combined with sunrise, when the sky tends to be clearer and a larger portion of the Milky Way can be visible.
Plan Your Astrophotography Experience
If you are planning an astrophotography experience, it is important to consider the lunar cycle, as moonlight can significantly affect night sky visibility.
For this reason, I recommend using the PhotoPills app to check the lunar calendar and plan your session accordingly.
